Kenyan and Indian workers on a U.S. consulate construction project in Milan worth Ksh45.2 billion ($350 million) have alleged underpayment and labor exploitation. An Associated Press investigation found some workers were paid as little as €1.55 per hour, despite promises of annual salaries exceeding €25,000. After deductions, their monthly pay dropped to about €500, and they worked 10-hour days, six days a week, under threat of dismissal or deportation. Two managers from U.S. contractor Caddell Construction have been arrested, and the U.S. State Department is cooperating with Italian prosecutors.
