KPLC Admits Deducting Up to 50% of Tokens for Debt Recovery

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has started recovering legacy debts by deducting arrears directly from prepaid token purchases. A customer noticed that for a Ksh 500 token purchase, they received 19.4 units, while another purchase of the same amount yielded only 9.7 units due to a 50% deduction for debt recovery related to last-mile connections. This practice has sparked debate among consumers who were unaware of these automatic deductions.
