Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stated that the UK will 'resolutely uphold' the self-determination of the Falkland Islands after Argentine President Javier Milei claimed the country needed to reclaim them. Milei announced sanctions against firms exploiting the territory, while two oil companies, Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum, plan to start oil extraction in the Sea Lion oilfield by 2028. A 2013 referendum showed that 99.8% of island residents wished to remain a British Overseas Territory.
