Benin: Houndété-Atchadé legal dispute postponed to 2027

The Cotonou Court of Appeal postponed until January 14, 2027, the dispute between the camps of Éric Houndété and Nourénou Atchadé over leadership of Les Démocrates, the main opposition party. After a court rejected Houndété’s request to annul Atchadé’s designation on April 29, 2026, Houndété appealed. The postponement follows a hearing on October 15. Meanwhile, some of Houndété’s supporters resigned on October 9, and Atchadé was elected party leader for five years at a congress in Porto-Novo on October 11.

Phrank Shaibu, the ADC presidential campaign council’s director of strategic communication, asked whether the funds had been released, where they were held and how they had been spent, and called for the publication of release documents and expenditure records. He also sought details of the public-health response timeline: the patient reportedly developed symptoms on October 7, sought care at a private facility on October 11 and received laboratory confirmation on October 20; 44 contacts were identified. Shaibu urged protection and resources for health workers and contacts and asked the government to clarify any proposed restrictions on campaigning or voting during the health emergency.
