Egypt's Answer to Unjust Detentions Is More Arrests

On May 12, families of prisoners gathered in Cairo to call for the release of their loved ones. In response, the National Security Agency summoned several families and arrested the organizers, including lawyers Wafaa el-Masry and Mohamed Abu el-Diar, and activist Hanan Tantawy, charging them with 'publishing false news.' Tantawy and el-Masry were released on bail, but Abu el-Diar remains detained, additionally charged with 'joining a terrorist organization.' Activist Ahmed Douma, released in 2023, was rearrested on April 6 for writing an article.
