Russia pounds Kyiv as its advance in eastern Ukraine slows to a crawl

Russia launched over 1,400 drones and 56 missiles into Ukraine on May 11 and 12, primarily targeting Kyiv after threatening to do so if Ukraine attacked its Victory Day parade. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed a ceasefire, but Moscow responded with attacks, justifying its strikes as reciprocity for Ukrainian assaults. The strikes caused destruction in at least 20 locations in the capital, including a residential building where 12 people were killed.
