Shift as Africa drives more than 40pc of Kenya's export earnings

In the first quarter of 2026, Africa accounted for 41.7% of Kenya's merchandise export earnings, up from 36.9% a year earlier. Exports to Africa rose 25.1% to Sh127.9 billion, contributing about 85% of the total export growth. The rebound follows a difficult 2025 and highlights Africa's growing role despite logistical challenges. Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui emphasized reducing transport costs to accelerate trade under the AfCFTA.
