The architect of Qatari autonomy

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who died on July 12, 2026 at age 74, transformed Qatar from a quiet energy supplier into a relevant and indispensable regional player. He used the country's gas wealth to launch Al Jazeera, Qatar Airways, and the sovereign wealth fund, and secured the 2022 World Cup. His mediation efforts in Lebanon, Darfur, and Palestine made Qatar a key broker. He abdicated in 2013 but his legacy of strategic indispensability outlived him.
