Sudan journalists’ union wins press freedom prize

The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate was awarded the 2026 Unesco/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize for its resilience in the face of ongoing repression. Since April 2023, at least 680 violations have been documented, including the killing of 34 journalists. The war in Sudan has also forced many journalists into exile, particularly in Nairobi, Cairo, and Kampala, where they are rebuilding their work. Unesco warned that this conflict has created a dangerous information vacuum, enabling the unchecked spread of misinformation.
