India's fertility rate falls below replacement level: Why it matters

India's total fertility rate has dropped to 1.9 children per woman, below the replacement level of 2.1, according to the latest SRS report. This decline, following decades of population control initiatives, raises concerns about future labour shortages and an ageing society. The TFR was 3.3 births per woman in the 2000s.
