Copyright flaws drain millions from Africa's music industry

According to a new report by the Music Economy Development Initiative (Medi), Nigeria's music industry loses $231 million annually due to weaknesses in copyright protection, enforcement, collective rights management, and royalty payment systems. Kenya loses $55 million annually. Despite growth in Spotify revenue, where Nigerian musicians earned over $42 million in 2025, structural and economic challenges continue to drain value from the industry.
