Mauritania’s female Islamic guides: Leading the fight against ‘extremism’

Mauritania's mourchidates program, launched in 2021 by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, trains female spiritual guides to combat extremism. Inspired by the Moroccan model, this program aims to strengthen community trust and promote moderate religious discourse. The mourchidates also address the social and emotional factors that make young people vulnerable to radicalization.
