Building collapse in Thiès: construction exceeding its R+3 permit at the center of investigation

A building under construction collapsed on October 27, 2026, in the Sud Stade district of Thiès, killing one person and burying two others, who were rescued alive and taken to a health facility. The Urban Planning Ministry says the project, authorized up to R+3, had reached R+5 during an inspection on June 9, 2026; a stop-work order was then posted on the building. A technical assessment will examine the structure, foundations, added floors, materials, and construction methods, but no definitive link has been established between the unauthorized floors and the collapse. The ministry also announced increased inspections of active construction sites and buildings showing signs of deterioration.

Three victims died at the scene and a fourth at the hospital; those identified included Nafisat Abubakar Aguye, Ibrahim Ado Bayero and George. Dauda Chukuba, Government House director-general and former Shiroro local government chairman, was injured, while reports that security operatives arrested a doctor who raised staffing concerns at Minna General Hospital had not been independently verified.
