Maï-Ndombe: Governor Seeks Moratorium on Ban on Wooden Boats to Prevent Malnutrition and Food Shortages

Maï-Ndombe Governor Nkoso Kevani Lebon is seeking a moratorium on the ban on wooden boats, due to take effect on November 15 on the Congo River, its tributaries and lakes. He says the boats are vital for transporting residents and moving agricultural and fishing products, warning that a ban could lead to malnutrition, higher prices and food shortages. Kutu civil society president Fidèle Lizorongo also called for the measure to be lifted or for boat operators to be given time to build metal vessels. The government’s promised safer boats are not yet in place, while waterways remain essential for transport and supplies in the province.
