EAC seeks $45m for production of medicines, vaccines

The East African Community (EAC) is seeking $45 million to strengthen regional production of medicines, vaccines and essential medical supplies. The effort aims to reduce dependence on external suppliers and improve preparedness for disease outbreaks. EAC Secretary-General Stephen Mbundi said investment in local manufacturing capacity is critical to ensuring access to health products and helping partner states respond to emergencies, including Ebola and other highly infectious diseases.

Mexico: “Brain-Eating” Amoeba Found in Six Yucatán Lakes; Cenotes Face Lower Risk

Naegleria fowleri was detected in six artificial lakes in Yucatán, which authorities closed after a water-sports instructor died in Mérida in September. Health Secretary Alberto Alcocer said the amoeba’s presence does not mean there is an outbreak and that infection occurs when contaminated water enters through the nose. More than 300 people who had visited the lake at Plaza La Isla were identified, with about 240 still under epidemiological surveillance in mid-September. Cenotes are less conducive to the amoeba because their water is cooler and circulates.

Kenya confirms a third Ebola case on its territory

Kenya’s Health Ministry confirmed a third Ebola case on Friday: a 65-year-old woman related to the first two patients. Quarantined on October 6, she tested positive after developing a fever, sore throat and general malaise, and is receiving treatment. The first patient, a Kenyan national living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, died in Nairobi on October 5; a family member was confirmed as the second case on Wednesday. Of 130 contacts of the first patient, 127 have been traced and quarantined, and authorities say no community transmission has been detected.
