On Monday, June 8, 2026 in Bamako, Chahana Takiou, journalist and editor of the biweekly '22 Septembre', was placed in detention by the National Cybercrime Unit for 'undermining the credibility of the state through the judiciary'. His trial is set for July 27. The Press House of Mali condemned a serious attack on press freedom, as the remarks were made during the Pan-African Media Forum. Takiou, recovering from a heart condition, had criticized the application of cybercrime law to journalists.
