Marathon: the World Championship will be a unique event starting in 2030

Starting in 2030, the World Championship marathon will become a distinct annual event, taking place in odd years, while a World Marathon Championship will be held in even years. World Athletics is in talks with Athens to host the first independent World Marathon Championship. The president of World Athletics, Seb Coe, described this initiative as an opportunity to celebrate the marathon in a setting that honors its heritage.
