Mexico’s historic Azteca Stadium to kickoff World Cup opener: All to know

Estadio Azteca in Mexico City will host the opening match of the 2026 World Cup between Mexico and South Africa. It becomes the first stadium to host World Cup matches in three separate tournaments (1970, 1986, 2026). Built between 1961 and 1966, the 83,000-seat venue has hosted iconic moments like Pele's third World Cup win in 1970 and Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal in 1986.
