Morocco - Algeria: Border Temporarily Reopened on April 30 Despite Tensions

On April 30, 2026, Algerian authorities repatriated 56 Moroccan citizens in an irregular situation via the Colonel Lotfi border post, marking a breach in the border closure that has been in place since 1994. This group, consisting solely of men, was assisted by the Moroccan Association for Aid to Migrants in Oujda. This is the fourth repatriation operation since the beginning of the year, despite ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two countries. The repatriated individuals came from several Moroccan cities, including Oujda and Nador.
