A fire broke out during the night of October 23–24, 2026, at the Kehlsteinhaus, known as Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest,” in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria. A smoke detector raised the alarm at about 9:50 p.m., bringing around 200 emergency responders to the site, which sits more than 1,800 meters above sea level and is difficult to reach. One person was detained, but investigators in Traunstein are still examining whether that person was connected to the fire; its cause remains unknown. Built in 1937 and 1938 and presented to Hitler for his 50th birthday, the historic building now houses a restaurant and attracts visitors.
