South Africa's anti-migrant protests: Intimidation and fear as deadline for foreigners to leave looms

A 36-year-old Malawian woman, Esnat Joseph, fled her home in Durban after men with machetes threatened her and her family, forcing her to seek refuge in a field with thousands of other foreigners. Anti-migrant groups March and March and the ActionSA party have set June 30 as the deadline for undocumented migrants to leave, while President Cyril Ramaphosa warned that scapegoating vulnerable people is not a solution. Several countries, including Malawi, Ghana, and Nigeria, are organizing repatriations, with about 3,500 foreigners having already volunteered to leave.
