Mexico begins legal action in US over deaths of its citizens in ICE custody

Mexico has filed criminal complaints with US state prosecutors after 17 of its citizens died in ICE custody or during immigration enforcement operations since Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025. The government sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Adelanto detention center in California, where four Mexicans have died, demanding an end to medical care delays and detention policies that fall short of standards. Mexico also plans to file a complaint with the US Department of Justice and has asked the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to investigate the deaths.
