The WHO has recommended clinical evaluation of two vaccines against the Bundibugyo Ebola virus: ChAdOx1, developed by the University of Oxford and the Serum Institute of India, and mRNA-1469, developed by Moderna. The candidates will join the multi-vaccine Tumaini trial, launched on October 23 in Bunia, once national approvals are granted. The DR Congo has endured its largest Ebola outbreak for nearly six months, with more than 10,500 confirmed cases and 5,126 deaths as of November 1, 2026. The trial uses a ring-vaccination approach and is already assessing the Ervebo vaccine against this strain.
