NECO: How Nigeria’s indigenous examination body became global assessment powerhouse

The National Examinations Council, NECO, was established in April 1999 and has since evolved into one of Africa's largest examination institutions, assessing millions of candidates. NECO broke WAEC's monopoly on secondary examinations in Nigeria by introducing assessments like the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Since its inception, over 35 million candidates have participated in NECO examinations, driven by policies aimed at increasing accessibility, especially in rural communities.
