NEMA Invites Public Comments on Plan to Build 7,128 Housing Units in Nairobi

Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has invited public comments on five environmental and social impact assessment reports for a planned 7,128-unit affordable and social housing project in Southlands, Mugumo-ini Ward, Lang’ata. The project is divided into four lots of 1,386 units and one lot of 1,584, with roads, water systems, shopping stalls and children’s play areas also planned. The consultation follows a High Court halt to construction over concerns about environmental compliance and public participation. In May 2026, the Environment and Land Court quashed the NEMA license and barred further construction until legal requirements were met.
