On the Thames, Swan Upping protects King Charles III's royal swans

The annual census of royal swans, Swan Upping, began Monday 13 July on the Thames at Staines, near London. Under the supervision of David Barber, the King's Swan Marker, young birds are briefly captured, weighed, and measured before being released. This nearly nine-century-old tradition takes place from July 13 to 17 between Sunbury Lock and Abingdon Bridge.
