UN: Senegal takes the lead of a commission in charge of decolonization

Senegalese diplomat Coly Seck was elected president of the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly for its 81st session on June 2, 2026 in New York. The committee is responsible for special political questions and decolonization, but also examines peacekeeping, UNRWA, and outer space. Senegal thus holds a leading role in UN work. In February 2026, Secretary-General António Guterres recalled that 17 non-self-governing territories remain to be decolonized.
