Over 10,000 Kibera Soweto Residents Given 13-Day Eviction Notice

The government has issued a 13-day eviction notice to over 10,000 tenants in Kibera's Soweto Zones C and D, requiring them to vacate by April 23, 2026. This eviction is part of an urban renewal program aimed at replacing Africa's largest informal settlement with modern apartments. Residents will be prioritized for relocation and allocation of affordable housing units being built in the area. The project plans to deliver 25,000 housing units across the Kibera informal settlement.
