Nuclear deterrence: France successfully launches the SyLEx sounding rocket at Biscarrosse

On the night of November 3–4, France’s Defence Procurement Agency successfully conducted an experimental launch of the SyLEx sounding rocket from the Biscarrosse missile test centre. Developed by ArianeGroup under the agency’s direction, the national launcher is designed to test technologies for French nuclear deterrence, hypersonic demonstrators and civilian applications. Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin said the launch enabled experiments essential to developing the M51.4 ballistic missile, less than a month after an acceptance test launch from the submarine Le Vigilant.

During the outage, residents had to travel more than 20 kilometres to Mutongo to make calls, send messages or carry out mobile money transactions. The disruption also affected commercial activity, humanitarian coordination and the rapid sharing of security alerts. Australian government defends social media ban for under 16s in court

The Australian government defended its ban on social media use by under-16s before the country’s highest court, citing risks including depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. Reddit and the Sydney-based Digital Freedom Project are challenging the law, arguing that it is disproportionate and infringes the constitutional freedom of political communication. After a two-day hearing, the court adjourned on Wednesday and is expected to rule in the coming months. In force since December, the law covers platforms including Reddit, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, which can face fines of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars for failing to take reasonable steps to remove underage accounts.
