Portugal, with Cristiano Ronaldo playing in his record-equalling sixth World Cup, were held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of the Congo in their Group K opener. Joao Neves headed Portugal ahead in the sixth minute, but Yoane Wissa equalised for DR Congo just before half-time, securing the African side's first ever point and goal at a World Cup. DR Congo's preparations were disrupted by an Ebola outbreak, while Portugal players wore wristbands in tribute to late teammate Diogo Jota.
