Why is Pakistan’s Sindh province facing a major child HIV outbreak?

At least 130 people, mostly children, have tested HIV-positive in an outbreak at KBV Hospital in Karachi, a SESSI-run facility. Officials screened over 10,500 people, confirming 120 cases. The outbreak, traced to October 2025, prompted two internal inquiries that found serious lapses in infection prevention protocols, with 78 infections and six deaths confirmed.
