Why Africa’s assets rarely translate into leverage

Africa seeks a larger role in the world, aiming for a stronger voice in trade, finance, and security. While the continent has strategic assets, the political capacity of African states to convert these assets into lasting influence remains uncertain. Democracy has gained legitimacy, but the institutions needed to support this democratic aspiration have not kept pace. African states must build legitimate and coherent forms of governance to achieve their continental ambitions.
