Recurring gas emissions won’t kill anyone, Ogun government insists

Ogun State Environment Commissioner Ola Oresanya says recurring gas emissions in parts of Ijebuland are not expected to kill anyone, but communities will be evacuated if investigations confirm a risk of death or permanent health damage. More than 100 pupils were reportedly hospitalised on Wednesday in Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo and Ago-Iwoye after inhaling a strange chemical odour. Tests detected methane in air samples, and the state is working with scientists and federal agencies to identify the source. The incidents have been reported since April, affecting several schools, while the cause of the latest episode in Ago-Iwoye remains under investigation.
