PIE Amendment Bill 'undermines constitutional commitments to housing and human dignity'

Civil society organizations affiliated with the Solidarity Space coalition marched to Parliament to demand the withdrawal of the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation Amendment Bill. The government proposes tougher penalties, including fines up to R2 million and imprisonment up to two years, for inciting land grabs. Buhle Booi, head of political organizing and campaigns at Ndifuna Ukwazi, argued that the amendments would criminalize protest and entrench poverty by creating a new offence of inciting occupation without consent, silencing community leaders.
