Tunisia: A Record Heat Summer in 2026

The summer of 2026 was the hottest ever recorded in Tunisia, with an average temperature exceeding the previous record by 2.9 °C. Intense heatwaves were observed in July and August, with an absolute record of 49.7 °C in Kairouan. A collective of young doctors reported numerous deaths attributed to these extreme temperatures, while the Tunisian Human Rights League recorded 23 deaths in prisons, exacerbated by heat and overcrowding.
