Sentenced to Death in 1985, an American Exonerated After New DNA Analysis

Douglas Stewart Carter, aged 71, spent 41 years on death row in Utah for a murder he did not commit. He was convicted in 1985 and again in 1992, based on testimony from two witnesses who later admitted they were paid and pressured by police, and on his confessions. New DNA testing on the crime scene has now exonerated him, leading to his release on September 28. Prosecutors have until November to decide whether to pursue a new trial.
