Lagos to enforce mandatory health insurance from January 2027

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu set December 31, 2026, as the deadline for residents, employers and workers to obtain health insurance before mandatory coverage takes effect on January 1, 2027. The new Lagos Private Health Plans (LPHP), aimed at salaried workers and companies, will complement Ilera Eko, which serves vulnerable residents and the informal sector. Sanwo-Olu said 21 health maintenance organisations had endorsed the plans, and licensed actuaries reviewed nearly two million claims and enrolment records to assess the cost of covering the formal sector.
