Senators Propose Phasing Out Boarding Schools in Shift to Hybrid Learning System

A motion sponsored by Senators Catherine Mumma and Veronica Maina has been tabled before the Kenyan Senate, proposing the gradual phasing out of boarding schools nationwide and replacing them with a hybrid system combining day and boarding arrangements. The reform aims to address recurring student unrest, arson attacks and insecurity in secondary schools, which have led to loss of lives, property destruction and learning disruption. The senators also call for mandatory annual fire safety audits, installation of emergency exits and firefighting equipment, and a comprehensive report on the implementation of recommendations from past school fire investigations.
