Resumption of discussions for voluntary repatriation of more than 200,000 refugees between DRC and CAR

A tripartite meeting between the DRC, CAR and UNHCR opened on June 9, 2026 in Kinshasa to resume the voluntary repatriation of refugees. Over 200,000 Central African refugees are registered in the DRC, mainly in the provinces of North Ubangi, South Ubangi and Bas-Uele. Approximately 65,000 new Central African asylum seekers arrived in May 2025 in Zapai. UNHCR, through its representative Pierre Atchom, committed to technical and financial support for a realistic action plan for a safe return.
