Reps push for 18-Month delay in reassignment of dormant Phone numbers

The House of Representatives in Nigeria has urged the Nigerian Communications Commission to extend the validity period for inactive phone numbers to 18 months before reassignment. This proposal aims to enhance compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023 and protect citizens from fraud and identity theft. Lawmaker Billy Osawaru suggested an additional six-month buffer for public announcements regarding SIM cards slated for reassignment. The motion was adopted without dissent.
