Russia: Apple bans Max, the app imposed by Moscow, without explanation

Apple removed the Max app from the App Store on June 3, 2026, preventing iPhone users in Russia from downloading the national messaging platform developed by VK and promoted by Putin's government. The removal also cut push notifications for existing users. Launched in spring 2025, Max is a super-app integrating social networks, public services, digital ID, and payments, but lacks end-to-end encryption, raising surveillance concerns. Since September 2025, it has been mandatory on all smartphones in Russia, while access to WhatsApp and Telegram has been restricted. Apple has not provided an official explanation.
