Ruto Says New Airport Construction Starts Next Month

President William Ruto announced that construction of a new airport will begin in July, a day after the government awarded a Ksh375 billion contract to state-owned Chinese firm China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) to modernize and expand Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The project, executed by China Road and Bridge Corporation, includes a new 230,000-square-metre terminal, a 4,500-metre parallel runway, and an 'Airport City' development with a Special Economic Zone. JKIA handled 8.93 million passengers in 2025, exceeding its original design capacity, with projections of over 13 million passengers by 2030.
