Rwanda central bank tasks lenders with more consumer protection duties

The National Bank of Rwanda has introduced consumer protection regulations requiring banks to ensure customers understand terms before signing. Previously, banks relied on lengthy documents that clients often signed without full comprehension, particularly in rural areas with limited literacy. Economist Dr Canizius Bihira praised the move, noting that financial institutions took advantage of customers' lack of knowledge. The regulations also include financial penalties for non-compliance.
