Abuja indigenes decry no restitution for land taken by military

Activist Dr. Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi has highlighted the plight of Abuja's indigenous peoples, warning of the imminent extinction of their languages (Gbagyi, Bassa, Gwandara, Koro, Ganagana). He noted that despite a Supreme Court ruling, there has been no restitution for lands taken under Military Decree No. 6 of 1976. Since 2025, the situation has worsened with state-led demolitions of homes, farms, and cultural sites, rendering families homeless and devastating linguistic ecosystems. The Original Inhabitants remain politically disenfranchised, unable to elect a governor or state legislature.
