Security crisis forces closure of around thirty schools in Masisi

The worsening security situation in the Masisi territory of North Kivu has forced about thirty primary and secondary schools to close, depriving thousands of children of education. According to a report by the civil society of the Katoyi sector, clashes between the FARDC and Wazalendo groups against AFC/M23 rebels damaged or made inaccessible 20 primary and 10 secondary schools. The crisis extends to the Osso Banyungu and Bahunde chiefdom sectors, where schools have been closed since November 2025. Education authorities have transferred some final-year students to still-operational exam centers.
