Senegal: Sonko wins second round against Faye before Constitutional Council

Senegal's Constitutional Council declared itself incompetent on June 17, 2026 to examine the appeal of 18 deputies against Ousmane Sonko's reinstatement to the National Assembly. The petition, filed by Tafsir Thioye and other parliamentarians, challenged the Bureau of the Assembly's decision of May 24, 2026. This ruling removes any legal challenge to Sonko's return, as he was elected President of the National Assembly. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had already unsuccessfully tried to oppose it through a referral to the Council.
