In the UK, a full hallmark includes a maker’s or sponsor’s mark, a fineness mark and an Assay Office mark; the offices are in Birmingham, Edinburgh, London and Sheffield. A 2026 YouGov survey commissioned by the four offices found that 52% of more than 2,000 adults were confident they understood hallmarks, while 92% considered hallmarking important once its purpose was explained. To compare offers, sellers should ask whether the price is based on total weight or recoverable gold, since settings and fastenings may contain other materials.
