State plans sale of eCitizen data to researchers, businesses

The Kenyan government plans to sell non-personal data collected through platforms such as eCitizen to generate additional revenue. A new agency, the National Data Governance and Emerging Technologies Council, will be established to oversee the commercialization of at least 1,000 datasets over five years. Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics and other state agencies will be available on a state-run marketplace, excluding personal data in line with data protection laws.
