This week, the United Nations Security Council will debate the renewal of the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) as civilians are at risk and need greater protection. Established in 2011, the mission is mandated to protect civilians and monitor human rights violations. Government forces have conducted bombardment campaigns in Upper Nile and Jonglei states, killing civilians and destroying essential infrastructure, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee.
