Clashes break out in Paris and other French cities amid fresh protests

Clashes broke out Saturday in Paris and several French cities during demonstrations against the cost of living, a week after rioting. Police arrested nearly 1,000 people, while 70,000 security personnel were deployed nationwide; two people were seriously injured, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said. The demonstrations drew an estimated 410,000 to 800,000 people, and the main Paris march was largely peaceful before clashes erupted as the crowd dispersed. The government faced anger over its protest crackdown as President Emmanuel Macron sought to restore order ahead of an election in six months.

Ousmane Sonko corners Bassirou Diomaye Faye: Inside the offensive in Parliament

The Pastef/Les Patriotes parliamentary group is maintaining its opposition to the 2026 supplementary finance bill in its current form after two days of review by the Finance and Budgetary Control Committee. It is asking the government to reconsider its budget choices, including cuts to public investment and social sectors, and to protect purchasing power if energy subsidies are reduced. Pastef also wants clarification on the 120 billion CFA francs linked to the CERP and implementation of the planned abolition of 19 public-sector entities, with at least 55 billion CFA francs in savings over three years. The group says its position does not amount to rejecting a revised budget, but criticizes the lack of consideration given to lawmakers’ requests.
